Ariyawathi’s inquiry report soon

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said the report of the inquiry into L.G. Ariyawathi, who arrived the country after being tortured by her Saudi Arabian employer, will be submitted to the relevant government officials, shortly.

Loans for self-employment and housing for North East

A loan scheme for self employment and housing will be introduced for the benefit of the poor families in the North and East, shortly. With a low annual interest rate of 4%, loans upto Rs.250,000 will be granted through the District Secretariats by the Bank of Ceylon. The re-payment period is over 10 years.

With number of refugees in Sri Lanka getting lesser and Tamils are returning homes, with the dawn of peace, thousands of Tamils are returning to Sri Lanka, Toronto Sun reported. It’s an amazing success story, and it’s because the 30-year war with the Tamil Tigers terrorist group is over. The terrorists lost. The war ended last year. Everyone can go home, the report said.

 

Tourism Ministry targets 35 percent growth  by year end

With the tremendous growth in the tourism sector after ending the three –decades long war against terrorism, the Ministry of Tourism targets a 35 percent growth in the sector before the end of 2010. The tourism sector has achieved a 28 percent growth during the past few months.

 

18th Amendment passed

The 18th Amendment to the Constitution was passed in Parliament a short while ago with a two-third majority. There was a total of 161 votes for the Amendment while only 17 MPs voted against, a majority of 144 votes. The Government received 11 more votes than the 150 votes required for a two-third majority.

US says its committed to helping Pakistan

President Barack Obama expressed condolences to flood-ravaged Pakistan on Tuesday as the United States increased humanitarian aid to help deal with the disaster which has killed more than 1,400 people. "The president is being kept fully informed on the evolving situation," said Mike Hammer, spokesman for the White House National Security Council. "Our relationship with Pakistan goes far beyond our shared commitment to fight extremists," he said.

 

Saudi Arabia orders Blackberry ban

Saudi Arabia is ordering its mobile operators to halt BlackBerry services throughout the kingdom this week, heightening tensions between device maker Research in Motion and governments demanding greater access to data sent on the phones. The Saudi state news agency SPA said in a report that the countrys telecom regulator has informed mobile service providers in the country that they must halt BlackBerry services starting on Friday.
